Teeth straightening for adults

Adult braces

The growing demand for a ‘perfect’ smile has seen adults turning to teeth straightening in their thousands. Some missed out on braces in their teenage years; some didn’t need them until later in life; and some had treatment previously, only for their teeth to move thanks to a lack of aftercare.

Sometimes patients are surprised to find out that they can still have braces as an adult. But while it’s true that teeth don’t move quite so easily as we get older, there’s no upper age limit and it’s never too late to improve your smile.

Conveniently braces have also become more appealing to adults and they are no longer the stuff of teenage nightmares. It’s out with overt metal headgear and in with inconspicuous hidden braces. Here are some of our most popular adult braces.

Invisalign

Invisalign is a hugely popular brace that uses a series of clear, removable aligners to gentle align your teeth. Each aligner is custom-made to move your teeth little by little. They’re virtually invisible and you can even take them out to eat, drink and brush your teeth. Our patients love the convenience and discreetness of Invisalign aligners. What’s more it’s ClinCheck software allows you to visualise your new smile from the very beginning using digital 3D models of your teeth.

Incognito lingual braces

If you’re looking for a brace that’s going to get you the least amount of attention, here it is. Incognito is a type of lingual brace, which means it sits on the lingual ‘tongue side’ of your teeth. Lingual braces can feel a bit strange and you may have a slight lisp at first, but this should quickly improve and in return you get a brace that’s essentially invisible.

Damon Clear

Damon Clear is a fixed brace more akin to the train tracks we all know and ‘love’. Importantly, though, instead of metal brackets, it has discreet clear braces that have been cleverly designed to blend in with your own teeth. Best of all, because it’s a fixed brace it’s great at straightening teeth and is ideal for treating complex cases and improving teeth that don’t bite together properly.

Inspire ICE

Inspire ICE features crystal-clear, stain-resistant brackets, which also benefit from a smooth surface and rounded contours for maximum comfort. It’s capable of treating most orthodontic problems, from simple crowding to complex cases.

Can adults expect the same results from braces as teenagers?

While adult’s smiles can take slightly longer to straighten, if your teeth and gums are healthy, you should expect the same great results as younger patients. Sometimes, though, adult patients can have some gum recession, which can become more obvious once teeth are aligned – resulting in ‘black triangles’ (small gaps between your teeth and gumline).

Adults are also more likely to have had previous dental work, which we may need to work around. For example, we’re not able to move implants using braces, but we can move the surrounding teeth. You can find out more about braces and implants in our recent blog article.
