Does Coffee Stain Your Teeth? The Truth Behind Dental Myths
You might be wondering ‘does coffee stain your teeth?’
Or
‘Are sugar-free drinks good for your teeth?’
There are lots of dental myths online, and knowing which ones to pay attention to can be confusing. Whilst there is truth in some, it’s important you don’t listen to everything you hear or read on the internet or social media.
The best approach is always to speak to your dentist if you’re unsure about anything. They work with patients day in, day out, so they are the best person to seek professional guidance.
The last thing you want to do is follow something you’ve read online and make your teeth or gum health worse. Your smile is an important part of your identity and confidence, so making sure it’s kept healthy and strong is key to feeling your best.
At Sensu we’ve transformed over 20,000 smiles and we want to make achieving a healthy smile, simple and accessible for our patients. We hear a lot of misinformation in our clinics, so we want to debunk some of these classic myths to help you enjoy healthy teeth for longer, without falling into the trap of bad dental advice or “quick DIY fixes”.
We spoke to Senior Cosmetic Dentist at Sensu, Dr Amerjote (Joe) Bansal, to debunk 5 classic dental myths.
It’s a common misconception that brushing your teeth more vigorously means they’re better cleaned. It’s easy to assume that this helps remove stubborn plaque and gives you a better clean. However, brushing too hard can actually damage your teeth and gums over time.
According to our Senior Cosmetic Dentist, Dr Amerjote (Joe) Bansal, this actually makes things worse if anything. As you’re over-brushing your gums, it’s one of the worst things you can do.
He advises investing in a really good electric toothbrush with a pressure sensor to make sure your teeth are brushed well. This ensures you apply the right amount of pressure to effectively remove plaque without causing unnecessary wear to your enamel or irritating your gums.
This is one of the biggest questions you might ask when you’re trying to maintain whiter, healthier teeth as it’s easy to be self conscious about which food and drink you’re consuming.
Darker drinks tend to stain teeth more as they contain pigments known as chromogens, which can attach to the enamel and gradually discolour teeth over time. However, this doesn’t mean you need to give up your morning coffee altogether! By having a good oral hygiene routine and regular professional cleaning, it can help minimise staining and keep your smile looking its best.
Dr. Joe Bansal advises using an electric toothbrush at home and seeing the hygienist two to three times a year. This can help keep stains at bay and ensure your teeth feel clean and shiny.
At Sensu, our hygiene sessions mean your teeth and gums get a deeper clean to remove any dirt or plaque build up. We also offer a free hygiene visit with any of our treatments, helping you start and finish your treatment journey with a healthy smile.
Sugar-free drinks can be slightly complicated when it comes to your teeth and gum health. Whilst many brands claim to be sugar-free, this isn’t necessarily always the case, so it can be confusing to know which are genuinely better options for your oral health.
Furthermore, just because the sugar content is reduced, it does not necessarily mean they are ‘good for your teeth’, as many sugar-free drinks still contain acids that can erode tooth enamel over time.
Dr Joe Bansal explains that it all depends on what drink it is. If it’s sparkling, then the acids in the sparkling drink can wear down your enamel. He advises always checking the label and reading the contents first.
There are a few drinks which can affect the colour and health of your teeth aside from sugary drinks and coffee. You can read a complete list here so you know which drinks to be aware of whilst still knowing you can enjoy yourself!

You might think that rinsing after brushing your teeth is a great way to wash away leftover toothpaste so your mouth feels cleaner and fresher.
There’s often an assumption that rinsing is an important final step in the brushing process and helps remove any remaining bacteria.
But is rinsing after brushing your teeth a good idea or not?
Dr Joe Bansal says that it isn’t, and the reason being that when you rinse after brushing, all the goodness and benefits of toothpaste are flushed down the sink.
If you have any further questions around brushing or the best dental products to use, speak to our dental hygienist who can advise on the most suitable oral care routine for your needs, including which toothbrush is best, toothpaste recommendations, and simple hygiene habits.
Mouthwash is a popular dental product which you might use as a quick way to freshen your breath and make your mouth feel cleaner, especially when you’re short of time (like on a morning for example).
It works as a supplementary product which can help reduce bacteria in your mouth and reach areas that are harder to brush, providing temporary freshness.
However, using mouthwash as a direct replacement for brushing can lead to gum and oral health problems, as mouthwash is much gentler and does not physically remove plaque. This is supported by Dr. Joe Bansal who said this approach is a no-go because mouthwash is not abrasive enough to effectively brush off all the bacteria and plaque from your teeth.
This means you’ll have to continue brushing your teeth, sadly!
