Cosmetic dental bonding is a procedure during which a tooth-coloured resin is applied and hardened onto the tooth for restoration purposes. It’s a simple, safe and painless procedure, which is great for correcting minor defects and improving your smile.

What is it used for?

Cosmetic bonding can be used to correct a range of dental problems, such as chipped and decayed teeth, gaps between teeth or dental cavities.

It can also be used as a purely cosmetic solution in order to improve the appearance of discoloured teeth or change the shape of teeth, for instance to make them longer. It’s often used as an alternative to fillings.

How does it work?

Before bonding, the teeth are cleaned and damaged or decayed tissue removed. The bonding material is then shaped, applied and set by your dentist.

Cosmetic bonding is a very straight-forward method, so much so it’s often carried out without using anaesthesia. The procedure itself usually takes less than an hour and requires no drilling. No further visit is required afterwards.

What are the advantages?

As previously mentioned, the procedure is quick and painless. Bonding is also one of the least expensive dental treatments out there, far less so than veneers or crowns for example. It also requires less removal of the enamel, the protective layer which protects the tooth, than other techniques like veneers.

What are the disadvantages?

Bonding material is less resistant and generally doesn’t last for as long as other well-known procedures, although it can last for years if you have good oral hygiene. The resin is also naturally less strain resistant.
