6 foods for healthy teeth

There are a great deal of functional foods to keep your heart healthy. Having said that, there is now a growing body of research finding certain foods which are also good for your teeth. Here is a list of eight we’ve gathered:

1. Although dairy products are known to be particularly important to bone health, research by journal General Dentistry recently found that cheese rapidly reduces pH levels.

2. Crisp foods and raw vegetables including carrots and cucumbers require serious chewing and this may disturb dental plaque hence serving as a cleansing mechanism. So instead of settling in your teeth and causing damage, all the bacteria are removed.

3. Another dairy which your teeth benefits from is milk, as a study published in the Journal of the American Dental Association found that drinking a glass of milk right after eating sugar-sweetened Fruit Loops reduced the level of acid in the mouth in comparison to other drinks such as apple juice or water.

4. Polyphenols can also be found in black and green tea, again reducing the risk of cavities and gum disease. This was confirmed by research undertaken at the University of Illinois at Chicago, which found that participants who frequently rinsed their mouth with black tea had less plaque build-up than those who rinsed their mouths with water.

5. Foods that are high in phosphorous such as meat, eggs and fish contribute to helping keep tooth enamel strong and healthy.

6. Citrus fruits like oranges help keep your gums healthy by strengthening blood vessels and connective tissues; this includes the connective tissues that hold your teeth in your jaw. The fruit contains high levels of vitamin C which helps reduce inflammation, which could prevent gingivitis.
