Why it’s vital you get your teeth whitened by professionals

Tooth discolouration is a common dental problem, which can be caused by a range of factors including poor oral hygiene, smoking, medication or just ageing in general.

With the arrival of wedding season and the summer holidays, a pearl white, perfect smile is becoming increasingly desired. As a result, the number of websites offering teeth whitening tips is on the rise – as is the number of interested parties.

Home solutions frequently encouraged by websites include baking soda, salt and rubbing lemon peel directly on teeth. While these may seem like ordinary and harmless ingredients, they can damage the enamel that coats your teeth – the hard white surface on your teeth.

This exposes the darker layer underneath, called the dentine, and therefore makes the teeth appear browner as well as causing sensitivity and pain. In the long term, damage to the enamel can lead to serious conditions, including tooth decay.

In addition, salons and spas offering treatment pose an additional risk – it’s against European law for anyone other than a dental health professional to perform such procedures. The regulation that came into effect in 2012 states “products containing or releasing up to 6 per cent hydrogen peroxide can be used, as long as products of this strength are sold only to dental practitioners.”

Not only is it illegal for such businesses to carry out teeth whitening treatments, but their lack of knowledge can cause significant damage to your teeth and gums.

At Sensu London we use technologically advanced and effective whitening treatments to help you achieve the perfect smile.
