Dental implants in London
Losing a tooth can be a distressing experience, whether it’s through injury or decay, and it can leave you feeling self-conscious about your smile. Don’t despair though, there are a few different ways we can replace missing teeth, and for most patients a dental or tooth implant is the best long-term solution.
A dental implant replaces the root of your missing tooth, providing a secure post onto which we can then fit a false tooth (a dental crown). Tooth implants don’t just look great, they also restore the function of your missing teeth, helping you to eat and brush with confidence.
Implants are very long-lasting, and in some cases they can last for life. It’s really important to look after your dental implant carefully though and keep it clean. Even though your implant is not susceptible to decay, plaque can still build up around it, leading to gum infection and potentially causing your implant to loosen.
What does dental implant treatment involve?
Dental implant treatment is usually carried out over a few short appointments. First of all we’ll examine your smile and make sure you’re a good candidate for implants. In some cases we may recommend orthodontic treatment to move your teeth and roots into the correct position before we can place an implant.
At your next appointment we’ll create a socket in your jaw bone, so we can insert the implant. This sounds intimidating but local anaesthetic will numb the area so you don’t feel any pain. If you’re nervous we can also offer you a mild sedative to help you relax.
Once your implant has been inserted we’ll give it time – usually a few months – to integrate with your bone, proving a secure anchor for your new tooth. In the meantime you won’t be left without a tooth, and we can fit a bridge or a denture to fill the gap.
Once your implant is ready we’ll see you again to fit your porcelain or ceramic crown, handmade by our technicians to ensure a perfect fit. You can start enjoying your new tooth straight away.
