Inlays and onlays are effective restorative treatments that can be used to repair severely weakened or damaged back teeth. In most cases they’re used when a filling isn’t suitable or needs replacing. Sometimes inlays and onlays can provide a less-invasive alternative to a crown – providing there’s enough of your tooth left intact.
Dental inlays are very similar to fillings and sit in between the bumps (also known as cusps) of your back teeth. Onlays are slightly larger and cover more of the tooth’s surface, including the cusps themselves.
Both inlays and onlays are custom-made from porcelain or composite resin, and they’re carefully crafted to blend in seamlessly with your natural teeth – restoring their strength and durability.
Once your inlays or onlays have been fitted you can quickly forget they’re there, and just look after them as you would your natural teeth. Inlay and onlay restorations are extremely hard wearing and if looked after well should last for around 30 years.
What does inlay and onlay treatment involve?
We’re delighted to be able to offer same-day treatment for inlays and onlays – saving you the time and the hassle of multiple appointments.
We use the latest techniques to create restorations that have both style and substance. Fitting your new inlay or onlay is very straightforward. We begin by carefully removing any damaged fillings and decay, before using a small camera to create a digital 3D impression of your tooth.
This impression is then used to create your individual restoration, which is made in-house during your appointment using the highest quality materials. After a final polish it’s ready to fit.
Once we’re happy with the shape and position, we’ll use a special technique to bond your restoration to your tooth – creating a strong and beautiful result. The skill of our clinicians ensures that the seam between your restoration and natural tooth is smooth and completely hidden.
