Most people think that orthodontic treatment means months or even years of wearing braces, so it’s no wonder that 6 Month Smiles has attracted a lot of interest. As its name implies, this clear, fixed brace straightens teeth in around just six months.
Not only is it fast, but it it’s also very inconspicuous, thanks to clear brackets and tooth-coloured wires, which discreetly blend into your teeth. But how exactly does it work? And why can it straighten teeth in half the time of conventional orthodontic treatment?
Six Month Smiles® vs Comprehensive Orthodontic Treatment
Comprehensive orthodontic treatment, using traditional train track braces, typically takes around 12 to 18 months. This is because, more often than not, both the front and back teeth need moving in order to achieve the perfect bite.
However, not every patient, particularly adults, needs comprehensive orthodontic treatment. Many of our patients are only concerned about the appearance of their front teeth and they are happy with the way they bite together.
It’s these cases that are perfect for Six Month Smiles, which focus on straightening just the front teeth in only six months. Obviously, not everyone will finish their treatment within exactly six months, and on average treatment times vary between four and nine months.
Who isn’t right for Six Month Smiles®?
It’s important for any patient considering Six Month Smiles to think carefully about what they want to achieve from their treatment. If you have mildly crooked, crowded or spaced teeth, then it’s a quick and cost effective alternative to comprehensive orthodontic treatment. However, if your case is a bit more complex, or you’d like to move your back teeth or change the way your teeth bite together, it might not be right for you.
